COPENHAGEN - Using a metal detector, a Danish amateur archaeologist has unearthed a huge cache of thousand-year-old Viking silver and gold coins and bracelets.

The treasure comprised more than 450 items, notable gold and silver bars, coins and arm rings from the Viking period, the Danish Ritzau new agency reported yesterday. Found in a field at Ramioese, north of the capital. It was the fourth-biggest Viking treasure hoard ever discovered in Denmark. The national museum said it would be worth many thousands of dollars.
